Your computer knows you better than your friends: Somanath

GUWAHATI Jan 17: To day the world is going through a big technological transition. Now even your computer system knows you better than your friends," said Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation, Dr Sreedhura Panicker Somanath in a felicitation event organised by Pragjyotishpur University at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalukshetra here today.

The event was organised to celebrate the success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission and to facilitate an interaction between Dr Somanath and students.

Addressing the gathering of students and other dignitaries, Dr Somanath said that in near future the world will witness different wars in different domains, which will not be about killing of people.

Explaining the impact of artificial intelligence (Al) in the society, he said, "Al is now around us. The phone we are using is learning about us bit by bit. The machine knows who you are and what you like. Al now even starts ruling many things, including language. This latest techno logical advancement has posed a challenge to many professions too."

According to the eminent. scientist, now the definition of power is all about the ability of the people to determine the future and how people or gamine themselves amid the technological revolution. He also emphasized on the need to understand the past glory of the nation.

"India is the best country for everyone of the world to live. It is the nation where everyone likes to live peace fully," he noted.

During an interaction with the students of the university and other institutions, he ad- vised the students to always be grateful to everyone.

"If you have gratitude, then you don't need motivation to progress. You must be grateful to your parents, teachers, nation and all," he said.

Replying to a question, be said that there is a need of many more missions to find the answers of many questions about the moon.

Talking about science education, he said, "If you learn something only for utility, then it will never be interesting. The learning must create intelligential inquiry, generate aesthetics within the mind of the people, and create joy of involvement. In my view science is actually a very artistically beautiful music."
Recalling Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, Somanath said that he was very fortunate to work with the team led by the great scientist. Chancellor of Pragjyotishpur University Prof Pradeep Kumar Joshi, Vice Chancellor Prof Smriti Kumar Sinha, Registrar Prof Jogesh Kakati, President of the Organising Committee Prof Par- imal Chandra Bhattacharya and Prof Nani Gopal Mahanta, Edu- cation Adviser to the State government were also present at the event and addressed the gathering. Since the programme coin- cided with Silpi Divas, the ceremonial lighting of a lamp and garlanding of the image of Jyoti Prasad Agarwala formally opened the felicitation-cum-interaction programme.
